How to choose a good vacuum bags for your vacuum sealer?

Vacuum bags have direct contact with food and is used frequently on a daily basis for food packaging, therefore, it’s undeniable that picking the right vacuum bag is important for both food packaging business and home use.

1.Material

The vacuum bag material is the most important factory to look at. The inner part of the bag is in direct contact with food, it needs to be food-safe material. The proper testing report should be available for the user to check. Testing report also allows users to check heat resistant levels like maximum temperature to use for slow-cooking or use in boiling water, minimum temperature resistance allows us to know if it’s safe to store in a freezer or blast freezer when the temperature is low.

If the bag is not food safe or doesn’t have high-temperature resistance, harmful substances will migrate into the food while cooking. In some cases, the bag is broken during freezer storage which defeats the purpose of vacuum packing.

Generally, PA (polyamide) and PE (polyethylene) are two common materials for food-safe vacuum bags.

2.Thickness

It’s important to have vacuum bags at a certain thickness level to avoid both external and internal damage when storing for the long term or during transportation. Some food like bone, shrimp, or fish with sharp parts which can easily break the bag, causing air leakage. The acceptable level of vacuum bag thickness should be a minimum of 80 microns for a single side.

4.Size

PA&PE vacuum bags come in 2 different types: embossed vacuum bags and smooth vacuum bags.

Embossed vacuum bags with 1 smooth surface and 1 rough surface is suitable for a portable home vacuum sealer and the price is usually 30-40% higher than smooth vacuum bags.

Smooth vacuum bags have 2 smooth surfaces which are suitable for commercial vacuum sealers. The bag is tough, durable, and sold at a more economical price than the embossed bag.
