Oxygen absorber

An oxygen absorber is a small packet or sachet containing materials that react with oxygen in order to reduce or eliminate the oxygen content in a sealed environment, such as a food package or storage container. The primary purpose of oxygen absorbers is to prevent the growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi, as well as to inhibit the oxidation of fats and oils, which can lead to rancidity in food products.

Oxygen absorbers typically contain iron powder, salt, and an activated carbon mixture. The iron powder reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide (rust), and the salt helps accelerate this reaction. The activated carbon helps to absorb any remaining gases and odours inside the package.

Common uses of oxygen absorbers include preserving the freshness and extending the shelf life of packaged foods, pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and other products that are sensitive to oxygen exposure. They are especially useful in vacuum-sealed or gas-flushed packaging where the oxygen content is reduced to slow down the deterioration of the contents.

It’s important to note that oxygen absorbers are not the same as desiccants, which are used to absorb moisture. Using both oxygen absorbers and desiccants in appropriate situations can help maintain the quality of packaged goods over an extended period.
