Oxygen absorber

An oxygen absorber is a small packet or sachet containing materials that react with oxygen to reduce or eliminate oxygen content in sealed environments, such as food packages or storage containers. Its primary purpose is to prevent the growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi, while also inhibiting the oxidation of fats and oils that can lead to rancidity in food products.

Typically, oxygen absorbers contain a mixture of iron powder, salt, and activated carbon. The iron powder reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide (rust), and the salt accelerates this reaction. Meanwhile, activated carbon absorbs any remaining gases and odors inside the package.

Commonly, oxygen absorbers preserve freshness and extend the shelf life of packaged foods, pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and other oxygen-sensitive products. They are especially effective in vacuum-sealed or gas-flushed packaging, where reducing oxygen content slows down deterioration.

It’s important to note that oxygen absorbers differ from desiccants, which are designed to absorb moisture. Using both oxygen absorbers and desiccants in appropriate situations can effectively maintain the quality of packaged goods over an extended period.
